Uncover Tanzania’s
Towering Gem: Mount Meru

Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak, rises to 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) and offers a unique and captivating trekking experience.
Often overshadowed by its famous neighbour, Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru stands proudly within Arusha National Park — a stunning volcanic mountain known for its lush slopes, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking scenery.

Geographical Highlights

Mount Meru is an active stratovolcano with a dramatic cone and a history of powerful eruptions.
Its last major eruption, over a century ago, shaped the remarkable caldera and rugged landscapes that make Meru one of East Africa’s most scenic treks.

  • Caldera: The summit features a spectacular caldera with sheer cliffs and a lush crater floor.
  • Little Meru: At 3,820 meters (12,522 feet), this acclimatization peak offers panoramic views of the main summit.
  • Momella Lakes: Located at the mountain’s base, these alkaline lakes host rich birdlife and create a beautiful starting point for the trek.
Mt Meru Ecological Zones

Trekking Mount Meru takes you through diverse ecological zones, each revealing unique landscapes, wildlife, and vegetation as you ascend toward the summit.

  • Cultivation Zone (1,500–2,000m):
Farmland and villages surround the lower slopes, where local communities grow crops such as coffee, bananas, and maize.
  • Montane Forest Zone (2,000–2,800m):
Dense rainforest teeming with wildlife, including colobus monkeys, antelopes, and vibrant birdlife.
  • Heath & Moorland Zone (2,800–3,500m):
Open landscapes filled with giant heathers and lobelias, offering expansive views across Arusha National Park.
  • Alpine Desert Zone (3,500–4,500m):
A dramatic high-altitude environment of rocky terrain, thin air, and striking volcanic formations.

Routes to Summit Mt. Meru

Mount Meru features a single route to the summit — the Momella Route. Renowned for its stunning scenery, rich wildlife encounters, and dramatic terrain, this trek begins at Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park.

The trail leads through lush forests, open moorlands, and along the breathtaking crater rim before reaching the summit. Most climbs take 4–6 days, with overnight stays in comfortable mountain huts along the way.

Climbing Experience

Climbing Mount Meru is a rewarding adventure that requires no technical mountaineering skills, but does demand good physical fitness and proper acclimatization to handle altitude and rugged terrain.

Mount Meru Trekking Tour: Climbing Tanzania’s Second-Highest Peak

Often overlooked, Mount Meru offers a quieter and more immersive trekking experience than Kilimanjaro. The journey begins in Arusha National Park, where wildlife sightings — including giraffes, buffalo, and warthogs — are possible even on foot.

Guided by experienced rangers, the trail climbs through dense forest and heathland, with monkeys overhead and birdsong surrounding you. As altitude increases, the landscape opens into dramatic alpine scenery. Nights are spent in mountain huts with warm meals, and on clear mornings, climbers may catch spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro rising in the distance.
